1st LD Writethru: 5 shot dead in South Africa's Gauteng Province

JOHANNESBURG, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- Five people were shot dead on Wednesday outside a tuck shop in Jeffsville, Atteridgeville, in South Africa's Gauteng Province, local police said in a statement.

The incident occurred at around 1:15 p.m. local time (1115 GMT), and paramedics declared all five victims dead at the scene, said the statement.

Police noted that an unknown number of suspects approached the victims, fired at them without any words, and then fled. The motive for the murders is not yet known, with the investigations underway.

The South African Broadcasting Corporation, citing South African Police Service Tshwane District Commissioner Samuel Thine, reported that three of the victims have been identified and are believed to be foreign nationals.
