3 killed after building collapses in South Africa's Soweto

JOHANNESBURG, Dec. 28 (Xinhua) -- Three people, including a child, were killed after a building collapsed in Soweto, a township in South Africa's Johannesburg, in the early hours of Sunday, according to local authorities.

The Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (JEMS) said it received an emergency call shortly after 3:00 a.m. local time (0100 GMT). At the time of the collapse, six people were inside the structure, three of whom were trapped under the rubble. A one-year-old and two adult women later died from their injuries.

The remaining three occupants were taken to the hospital, and their conditions have not yet been disclosed, according to the JEMS.

The authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the collapse.

Emergency officials urged communities to report visible cracks, shifting walls, and unsafe buildings before tragedy strikes.
