Namibia to open sevens rugby season at South African invitational tournament

WINDHOEK, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- The Namibia Rugby Union (NRU) on Tuesday confirmed its touring squad for the Witz Barbarians 7s Tournament in Ceres, South Africa, marking the start of the nation's 2026 international rugby calendar.

The 13-player squad, which departed Windhoek on Tuesday, is led by captain Thehard Lintvelt.

The Ceres Invitational is regarded as an important fixture for Southern African nations to test emerging talent and build momentum before the main international sevens circuit begins.

Namibia's build-up began late last year with a talent identification pool of around 38 players scouted at the Ongos 7s. Following a final selection camp held in Windhoek from Jan. 8 to 10, the squad was trimmed to the touring group.

In a brief statement, officials expressed confidence in the team's preparation, saying, "Wishing the team the very best as they head to Ceres."

Namibia will open its season at the tournament against the hosts Witz Barbarians and South African invitational sides from Western Province and Boland.
