A 55-year-old man sustained serious injuries after two assailants fired shots at him during an attempted cellphone robbery in Pretoria on Sunday.

"An altercation ensued and the suspects shot the victim on the upper body before jumping into the car, a silver grey Renault Clio, where the third suspect was sitting and they drove off," police spokesperson Captain Mavela Masondo revealed in a statement.

In mobile footage circulating widely on social media, the getaway car can be seen speeding away from the scene of the crime.

A round of gunshots is then fired as the assailants drive off.

Police have subsequently opened a case of attempted murder and attempted robbery.

They have asked the public to come forward with any information that could lead to the arrest of the "cellphone grabbing" suspects.

Masondo said the victim was receiving medical attention and his condition was serious.
