South African superstar AB de Villiers didn't just get his Indian Premier League (IPL) campaign off to a rollicking start with a win and personal half-century for Royal Challengers Bangalore on Monday.

The 36-year-old master blaster also brought up the milestone of 200 sixes in the tournament just for RCB, who he has represented loyally since 2011 after beginning his IPL career with Delhi Daredevils.

He entered Bangalore's tournament opener in Dubai on 199 sixes for them, and the two he struck off Sunrisers Hyderabad's seamer Sandeep Sharma propelled him to 201.

De Villiers hit a typically fluent 51 off 30 balls in RCB's eventual triumph by 10 runs.

His "maximums" entrenched his position as second most prolific six-hitter in IPL history, where he currently stands on 214 overall, even if still some way off big West Indian Chris Gayle who has registered 326 spread across three franchises.

Only three players - Gayle, De Villiers and MS Dhoni (209) - have slammed 200 or more sixes in the IPL.

The next best South African on the list, in distant 25th overall, is David Miller (ex-Kings XI Punjab, now of Rajasthan Royals) with 87.

De Villiers' similarly high-profile RCB team-mate Virat Kohli has accumulated 204 sixes for them, but that includes matches outside the IPL like the former T20 Champions League, and he currently stands on 190 in the IPL itself.
